Storm surge risk maps updated by National Hurricane Center

The National Hurricane Center has released an updated version of its Storm Surge Risk Map. The Storm Surge Map is an interactive tool demonstrating flood vulnerability for people living in hurricane-prone areas.

According to the National Hurricane Center, the new map features a "better resolution of inundation risk and additional mapped locations."

The map can be used to find out if you live in an evacuation zone or to learn more about where you should evacuate in the event of a hurricane.

The map will also show expected water levels based on the hurricane's strength, from category one to category five.

Hurricane season is now in full swing, so anyone living in an area that could be affected by a storm should have a complete plan for their home or business.

RELATED | What is a storm surge?

Storm surge is the most dangerous and destructive part of a hurricane. Massive amounts of water can be pushed onto land, engulfing anything in its path, devastating homes or businesses along the coast.

The National Hurricane Center says half of all deaths in hurricanes since 1970 are due to storm surges. It is essential to know that preparing for hurricane-strength winds is much different from preparing for a water wall of water.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, 25% of businesses never reopen after being hit by a storm.
