New "destructive" weather alerts for mobile devices

The National Weather Services has added a new emergency alert that will be sent to mobile devices. The "destructive" weather alert will warn anyone in harm's way.

According to the National Weather Service this new category of an alert will be triggered when a severe thunderstorm begins to produce damaging winds, hail, or lightning.

Dangerous weather conditions that come up during a severe thunderstorm include straight-line winds, derechoes, cloud-to-ground lightning, and flash floods.

The NWS will now monitor these types of severe conditions and a warning will be triggered.

The alerts will include three categories that detail the damage threat. They include base, considerable, or destructive damage threats.

The NWS says only 10 percent of all severe thunderstorms reach the destructive category each year in the United States. This new alert will be delivered to anyone that is in a location where urgent action is needed to get to safety.

Virginia governor urges residents to create hurricane plan

Virginia's Governor, Ralph Northam, is asking people in Virginia to put together a hurricane response plan. In a recent report published by The Gazette-Virginian, Governor Northam is warning state residents about the forecast for a very busy hurricane season.

The governor is warning everyone, not just those who live or work in the coastal areas. There is a risk of inland flooding and damage from strong winds for most of the state, should the right storm track bring a hurricane into Virginia.

Coastal flooding, storm surge, and other wind damage is also a threat for those living on the coast.

“Hurricanes and tropical storms can have devastating impacts on every part of our commonwealth, not just coastal communities,” Northam said. “As the 2021 hurricane season begins, now is the time for all Virginians to prepare for a potential storm by checking your insurance coverage, making an emergency plan, and having a disaster kit ready.”

Tropical Storm Bill churning off the East Coast

Tropical Storm Bill is churning off the East Coast, already the second named storm of the 2021 hurricane season for the Atlantic Basin.

According to the National Weather Service the storm is moving northeast, about 240 miles southeast of Nantucket, Massachusetts.

At this point meteorologists do not expect the storm to cause any significant damage to property. Rough surf should impact boating and fishing off the coast, but the storm is expected to dissipate sometime Wednesday.

STUDY: Top 15 regions at risk for hurricane damage in 2021

A new report released by CoreLogic reveals the top 15 metropolitan areas that are at risk for hurricane damage. CoreLogic is a data analytics firm that provides risk assessment, valuation, and market intelligence in the housing industry.

Their 2021 Hurricane Report provides a statistical analysis for single family residential homes, and multifamily homes that may be at risk of sustaining damage from either hurricane winds or storm surge flooding.

In the report, CoreLogic says "increasing sea levels influenced by climate change will bring a greater frequency and severity of storm surge flooding to exposed communities."

STUDY: Hurricanes growing stronger, more property damage is likely

CoreLogic also looked at population densities, as well as the number of single family residential (SFR), and multifamily residential (MFR) structures that in coastal areas or areas deemed to be at risk of storm surge.

Their statistical analysis led them to rank the top 15 metropolitan areas at risk for property damage this year.

Here are the top 5:

1 - New York City

2 - Miami

3 - Tampa, FL

4 - New Orleans

5 - Virginia Beach, VA

According to the report in the New York City region more than 780,000 SFR, and more than 100,000 MFR homes are at risk of storm surge damage. More than 3.3 million SFR, and more than 448,000 MFR homes are at risk for wind damage in New York City.

The report includes an analysis of the strength or severity of a storm, the potential damage as far as cost per square foot to a structure. Reconstruction costs after a storm are staggering, in some cases reaching billions of dollars in a single metropolitan area that is impacted.
