Hurricane Dorian 2019

Hurricane Dorian was recently upgraded to a Category 4 Hurricane as it skirted past the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, and is expected to hit landfall anywhere from South Florida to North Florida to Georgia to South Carolina to North Carolina with sustained winds estimated to be 130 mph on Monday and perhaps, Tuesday.

The exact forecast track the storm will take through the weekend remains a bit uncertain, as reported by The Weather Channel, but it is becoming certain that Dorian will pass through the Bahamas on its way to the entire southeast coast of the US. The southeast coast can expect to see very heavy rain on Monday and Tuesday. Flood watches are now in effect into the weekend for much of the southeast coast.

According to Michael Perlmuter, Esq. President of the Alex N. Sill Company, North America’s leading loss consultant and appraiser, “There are multiple insurance coverage issues that most business owners are unfamiliar with, such as:

  • Hurricane damage can occur due to wind, driven rain and flooding water. Depending on your coverage and the circumstances surrounding the damage, the loss may either be covered or not covered, and/or the scope of the loss may be limited;
  • Personal Property damage must be closely documented. It is suggested that photos be taken of any damage;
  • There are many exclusions and/or limitations that may come into play. Those could include flood exclusions, mold exclusions, and limitations on roof replacements.”

It is best that any business owner or individual homeowner who incurs substantial damage immediately contact a professional licensed public adjuster qualified and experienced to provide them advice as to how to handle their claims and what may be covered.
