The National Association of Public Insurance Adjusters (NAPIA) recently held its Mid-Year Meeting in Orlando, Florida. Despite the unexpected inclement weather, the attendees were presented with a full agenda of helpful instruction and advice from a panel that included the legal counsel for NAPIA, several insurance coverage counsel speakers, a noted national claims expert, and a professional microbiologist. The panel provided insights and advice to the attending public insurance adjusters to help them better advise their insured clients during future property claims adjustments.

Jeffrey O’Connor, President of NAPIA and Executive Vice President for the Alex N. Sill Company opened the conference by setting the focus of the event on four primary areas:

  1. Providing the public adjusters in attendance with ethical training and instruction on the best ways to assist property owners whom have suffered serious losses and were not provided fair settlements by their own insurers;
  2. A view of the future on the entire property and casualty insurance industry, and technology that would likely come into play going forward to impact the industry;
  3. An understanding of the impact and characteristics of mold and fungus in indoor settings, and how to best represent insureds that suffer such claims; and
  4. Practices for managing expert witness testimony at trial, in the event that a public adjuster is called to testify on behalf of its insured client at trial.

The highlight of the meeting was an inspirational, as well as humorous, presentation by international best-selling writer Bill Wilson, Jr. CPCU, ARM, AIM, AAM, who had penned “When Words Collide: Resolving Insurance Coverage and Claims Disputes”. The book, written by Mr. Wilson, who has spent the past 40 years in the insurance coverage industry, has been hailed by critics as one of the best ever written on the subject of insurance coverage. Mr. Wilson repeatedly pointed out the good and important work being done by the attending public adjusters representing unsuspecting insureds who typically believed that their insurance provider would treat them fairly in the event of a claim. But, in fact, insurance providers can’t avoid their conflict of interest in handling and adjusting claims for their clients. They have an obligation to the shareholders to attempt to minimize claims payments while fulfilling the obligation presented by their policies to adjust losses suffered by their insured clients.

The meeting also provided, as always, the opportunity for attending public adjusters to view the latest in technological products and services from industry vendors serving the claims adjustment business, as well as to network and share best practices with other public adjusters from around the country. The meeting drew public adjusting attendees from around the country, from as far west and south as Hawaii, Texas, and Florida to as far east and north as Massachusetts, with many other attendees from what politicos refer to as the “fly-over” states.

As an active member of NAPIA, this event is a great opportunity to play a part in the continued advancement and regulations benefitting insureds across the United States.
